Carpentry and joinery, with a focus on restoration
I'm a carpenter and joiner based in Leicestershire, taking on a range of carpentry and joinery work, from bespoke furniture and fitted storage to repairs and finishing.
My particular area of expertice is the repair and restoration of traditional timber windows and doors. Where possible, I prefer to repair what is already there rather than replacing it. A lot of timber windows that look beyond saving can actually be brought back into good working order by removing the damaged areas and carefully treating affected areas.
Repairing rather than replacing
When repairing a window, I try to keep as much of the original timber as possible. Damaged timber is cut back to sound wood, which is then treated for rot, and new sections are carefully shaped and joined into the existing frame.
For external repairs, I use Accoya where it is suitable. I source much of this from surplus material from other joinery workshops making new timber windows. These pieces would otherwise be burnt or binned, so using them for repairs gives good quality timber another use and helps reduce waste.
For smaller or more awkward areas, I also use a two-part epoxy repair system where appropriate. This allows me to repair and reshape areas of damaged timber without having to remove more of the original material than necessary and preserving detail.
Once the repairs are complete, I prepare and paint the timber using a suitable exterior paint system, helping to protect the repair and extend the life of the window.
More Than Restorations
Although timber window and door restoration is a big part of what I do, it's not all I do. I also take on bespoke joinery, fitted furniture, shelving, repairs, painting and other carpentry work.
